OUR BEGINNING
Born in Mathare. Built for Mathare.
PaaMoja Initiative was born from a simple but powerful belief — that the people who understand a community best are the ones who live in it. Founded by Jesse Jacktone, who was born in rural Kenya and raised in the Mathare slums, PaaMoja grew from lived experience, not distant observation.
Growing up in Mathare — one of Kenya’s largest informal settlements where around 500,000 people live in less than one square mile — Jesse witnessed firsthand the challenges of poverty, limited opportunity, and systemic neglect. But he also saw something else: resilience, creativity, and an unshakeable sense of community.
